Putting the Service Back in SaaS
SaaS is one of the hottest technical terms over the last few years. SaaS is an abbreviation for Software-as-a-Service. It is a cloud computing model that means that you don’t have to download or install any program on a computer for it to work. (There are two other cloud computing models IaaS- Infrastructure as a service and PaaS- Platform as a service.) The benefit of this to a company is that the third party application is accessible from any device. In our constantly moving and mobile world that means that people can use a product without being figuratively handcuffed to their desk.
Instead of this blog going deeper and deeper technically, I wanted to talk about what I think is most important part of the SaaS term-“service”. So many people get lost in the coolness of some technical ability of a product and forget that at its root it is supposed to help accomplish a task.
SaaS Has A Purpose
So the core question is not how is it built, but how does it improve your life? How does it make your business better? One of the most important business questions that anyone can ask about any product, software, tool, gizmo, gadget, doohickey, widget, etc is what problem does it solve?
“What Problem Does It Solve?”
BirdSeed is a SaaS product. It was designed when we realized that almost every business face specific challenges in regard to its online customers. The challenges are threefold. First, when customers visit any business they are at different stages of the buying cycle. Second, customers have different preferences in how they like to engage and communicate with a company. Third, the customers can access a company’s website 24/7. BirdSeed was built and designed to address all three of these issues. Although the technology and programming behind it is massive and incredible, the overall idea of “service” is what makes BirdSeed work. It solves the three identified problems in a simple way.
When we think of service, in order for it to be good service it has to be efficient, easy-to-use and add value. Taking something incredibly complex and making it simple is the mark of a truly great product. When Steve Jobs was discussing the iPod, he stated
“Look at the design of a lot of consumer products — they’re really complicated surfaces. We tried to make something much more holistic and simple. When you first start off trying to solve a problem, the first solutions you come up with are very complex, and most people stop there. But if you keep going, and live with the problem and peel more layers of the onion off, you can often times arrive at some very elegant and simple solutions. Most people just don’t put in the time or energy to get there. We believe that customers are smart, and want objects which are well thought through”
